Let me just say, I love Google. Ever since they introduced free directory assistance, they had me at hello. Their search engine, that’s also nifty, but I’m a little freaked by their newest innovation — Google Lattitude.

As a fat person, I like to occasionally make a clandestine visit to restaurants with good food, or even places with food that my personal physician regards as dangerous to my long term health.

(Image created by Alexi Kostibas and licensed under Creative Commons attribution only. See more of his photos on Flickr.)

I like french fries and hope one day to convince my loving wife that a Bacon Explosion is a good idea. Right now, she’s training for a marathon relay or some distance race. She was less than enthusiastic about making the Bacon Explosion when I mentioned it.

She mumbled something about leaving me for the genius who invented it, which also was disconcerting.

Anyway, Google’s Latitude is basically a stalking utility…. okay, not rally. It allows other people to see your location and track you using Google maps. I prefer the old method where the Frau just asked me, “Honey…where you been?”

Google Latitude Social Geo Location or Creepy Stalking Utility?

In ancient times, a breath mint to cover the odor of a Wendy’s Double, large fries, and Mega Frosty and I was home free. What kind of hell is going to break loose when she goes to Google Maps and sees a little picture of me at Wendy’s?

Thankfully for tubby diet cheats, the service works only on a few wireless handsets and WIFI computers. There will be abundant privacy protections and user controlled levels of access to location info.

Yet, my heart is still troubled.

I think it won’t be long before some smart developer creates an APP called LEASH that sends the Frau a text message the instant I begin to move in the direction of a restaurant.

Some innovations just aren’t progress. Exotic car sharing clubs…good idea… climate controlled Dallas car storage…good idea. Google Latitude…..

Google Latitude: What say you?

Although you can shut off tracking, it still makes me uncomfortable.

It would be handy. Like today, for instance, I was tutoring IB European History in New Tampa and my wife was at the gym. Had I had the new Google Latitude activated, I would not have had to drive home and read a note on the counter.

It would be handy, but I am just not ready for it.

Is anyone else a little freaked out by Google Latitude?

I mean this is a lot worse than those Google maps guys spotting family pets on window sills… Being found isn’t always good. Soon I may be at my ideal weight thanks to Google Latitude.

I’m sure Google will find a way to serve ads based upon where you are, which would be neat, especially around lunch time.
