Even the Dodge Viper, a sports car icon, will likely receive a pink slip. Soon, the only way to drive a Viper will be by renting an exotic car or buying a used Viper.

US News and World Report predicts that cash-strapped auto buyers are looking for the best gas mileage and the most practical vehicle, rather than head snapping zero to 60 performance or stylish racing lines.

Likely these are the cars enthusiasts will be kissing good-bye in 2009:

Honda S2000:

The S2000 has always been considered a good value for the money. For only a little more than the price of an Accord, performance car fans could buy this convertible roadster. The car was a celebration of Honda’s 50^th anniversary, but slumping sales are forcing the Japanese automaker to retire it.

Chrysler PT Cruiser:

A car that inspires either strong love or intense hatred, the PT Cruiser was inspired by cars from the 1940s and has a distinctive look. Legally classified as a light truck and therefore held to less stringent emissions standards, the PT Cruiser may be another casualty of Chrysler’s efforts to cut costs.

Saturn Sky:

Even the beautiful styling of the Saturn Sky cannot save this performance vehicle. It’s capable of a sub 6 second zero to 60, but even those impressive statistics aren’t enough to keep it in production. In fact, the entire Saturn line is likely to be discontinued.

Hummer H3:

As gas prices soared last year, sales of the Hummer H3 dropped. Even though the H3 excels off road and is smaller than older Hummers. The large SUVs are out of fashion because consumers fear a return to higher gas prices. GM will probably discontinue the brand.

Lexus SC:

A true luxury convertible, the Lexus SC is also known for its comfortable and well-appointed interior. However, Lexus plans to retire its only convertible this year.

Dodge Viper:

The Viper is a popular model among exotic car sharing clubs. Its performance and styling make it a frequent Car and Driver cover car. Dodge has tried to avoid discontinuing the Viper, but production of the Viper has been halted.
