Visitors to Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, TN are some of the same folks who might enjoy a stop at DFW Elite Toy Museum in Fort Worth, TX. True auto aficionados will find a collection of about 250 classic cars and motorcycles dating from 1924 to 2003 at the Lane Motor Museum.

The collection includes cars from North and South America, Asia, and Europe. The motoring museum’s collection includes many European cars and a substantial number of quirky cars, prototypes, and micro cars.

The museum, housed in a 152,000 square foot former Sunbeam bakery, differs from many auto museums in that it maintains its cars in running condition. The building has many period architectural touches that make it the perfect place to display and store classic cars.

Perhaps the best way to really get a flavor of the vintage cars on display at the Lane Motoring Museum is to take a peak at the classic car videos the museum has posted on You Tube.

The majority of the collection is made up of cars manufactured between 1950 and 1970. Part of the museum’s collection is arranged by country.

The museum is an especially fun place for car enthusiasts to visit because–on select days–they give rides in some of the vintage automobiles to museum visitors. If you’re willing to forego the insanity of day Black Friday shopping, you ought to park yourself at the Lane Motoring Museum at 702 Murfreesboro Pike in Nashville, TN, because that is usually one of the days when rides are available to museum visitors.

The museum is open to guests from Thursday to Monday between the hours of 10 am to 5 pm. It is closed on New Years Day, Christmas Day, and Thanksgiving Day.

Admission costs $5 for adults, $3 for seniors (55+) and is free for folks under the age of 17. For details call the Lane Motoring Museum at (615) 742-7445 or visit the museum web site at http://www.lanemotormuseum.com.

Among the quirkier vehicles in the museum is a 1932 Hellicron, a French helicopter-powered car. The museum’s Hellicron is one of the few remaining drivable examples of this model.

Some excellent photos of the Lane Motoring Museum collection appeared in the October 2007 issue of My Machine, a Nashville lifestyle publication, which published an interesting interview of the owners of the museum, Jeff and Susan Lane. (Take a peak at a pdf of that article written by Mark Helbock.)

For those who wish to learn more about the collection and Jeff and Susan Lane prior to visiting, take a peak a recent article in pdf form by Trish Miburn about the Lane Motoring Museum that appeared in The Tennessee Magazine.

One other great resource before you visit is the Lane Motor Museum photo gallery of Chip Curley.

The next time I drive back to Florida from the relatives in Chicago, I am going to be sure to take a route that includes a stop at the Lane Motor Museum.
