Toyota iQ

Looks like Toyota designers are getting in on the “i” craze  with the Toyota iQ.

[2007_Frankfurt_Auto_Show_08.jpg]
Toyota’s new mini-car concept, the IQ, was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The IQ is only 2.98 m long which makes it about a foot longer than the Smart ForTwo. While the Smart is strictly a two seater, the Japanese mini is advertised as a 3+1 seater. That means there are two seats that can be inhabited by adults in the front.

The asymmetrical dashboard design allows the front passenger seat to be pulled forward, allowing another adult and potentially a child to sit in the back hence the + 1. No information is available about what kind of drivetrain the car might include other than it’s location at the front of the car. The IQ may go on sale in Europe as early as 2009 and would likely have an engine in the 1.0L range.

Now you can have your drive your iQ while talking on your iPhone while playing inside is you iPod.
I wonder if trends are for the i’s of this world.

Alright DFW Elite Auto Rental help me join the “i” trend  and invoke my unusual exoticness by renting me the original “i” car BMW Isetta.

Spyker Sells

Dutch Spyker shareholders

approve sale of Formula 1 team

http://in.reuters.com/article/topNews/idINIndia-29779220070929

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch sports car maker Spyker Cars NV said on Saturday its shareholders had approved the sale of its Formula One team as part of its refinancing operations.

Spyker might just get themselves out of the money hole yet.  They have done everything to sell their name (for electronics) to now the sale of the F1 team.

Though  the Spyker Spyder is my favorite exotic fast car their financial management team needs to get a few help suggestions.   Like one suggestion maybe they need to jump in on the hottest trend, a Car Club.   DFW Elite Car Club is one of the hottest and best Car Clubs in the state of Texas.  They have a great garage full of every thing from Rolls Royce , Ferrari, Lamborghini to Aston Martin.

Automotive Art Gallery

Alright you gearheads and collectors of automotive art this website is for you.

Legacy Motors

Automotive Art Gallery

www.automotive-art.com.

This is a great website for gearheads and collectors for they include a variety of gallery categories. They range from Classic Cars to Motorcycles. Sites include Vintage Posters to Car Schematics. This is a must bookmark site.

The only thing that is disappointed me about this site was they did not included a toy collection site. I believe no Automotive Art Gallery is complete without the toy’s section. They need to contact a real collector like Ron Sturgeon (gearhead specialist) about his collection of rare and special toy’s. DFW Toy Museum might have a toy that matches the print art.

Both sites are worth the visits. And the special thing about DFW Toy Museum is admission is free and you can visit in person if you live in or vacationing in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Infinite EX35 Crossover

Japan’s Eagle has landed.

BY STEVE SILER, August 2007
Infiniti relentlessly pursues a sporty image as much as Lexus claims to relentlessly pursue, well, you know what. So it surprised us somewhat that Infiniti chose the stodgy ol’ Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance to unveil—officially, anyway—what is arguably its sportiest ute yet: the G35-based EX35 crossover. Think of it as a G35 wagon. Or a mini FX35. We see a spiritual descendant of the 1980 AMC Eagle wagon built upon one of the world’s most prolific and capable platforms and stuffed with a swank interior.

Vertu, the luxury division of Nokia, today announced a £12,547 mobile Ferrari-branded handset.

Released to coincide with Ferrari’s 60th anniversary, the Vertu Ascent Ferrari 60 phone went on sale in Nokia stores in London, Paris, Hong Kong and Singapore this morning, Nokia said.

“We worked very closely [with Ferrari] to develop this limited edition of 60 phones. The detailing on the phone is inspired by detailing on a number of Ferrari cars,” Vertu spokeswoman Elizabeth Maragh said in a statement.

Consumer technology firms teaming up with luxury brands is of course nothing new - just this week Samsung joined forces with fashion designer Giorgio Armani to produce a range of phones, TVs and other products.

New Acer Ferrari 1100 Laptop

Acer is to add to its line-up of Ferrari-branded laptops with the introduction of the 12.1in Ferrari 1100.

The ultraportable dimensions of the Acer Ferrari 1100 will contrast with the more expansive Ferrari laptop models Acer has launched in the past.

The Ferrari 1100 will have a slot-loading DVD SuperMulti dual-layer disc drive and has been designed by Acer to be hardier than the average F1 chassis. Rather than crumpling on impact, it comes clad in durable carbon fibre.

Acer has also specced out the Ferrari 100 for entertainment use, equipping it with a pair of built-in Dolby Surround Sound stereo speakers. An ATI Radeon X1250 video chip will process 3D graphics and the AMD Turion 64X2-based laptop will also sport a 250GB hard disk.

VoIP calls in noisy environments are no problem for the Ferrari 1100 as Acer PureZone technology cleans the sound field with beam forming, echo cancellation and noise suppression technologies.

As well as its multimedia credentials, the Acer Ferrari 1100 will be eminently practical for business use: it weighs less than 2kg, so is highly portable, supports VoIP phone calls and has a powerful 802.11 a. bug, g and draft-N wireless chip. Wi-Fi signals are bolstered by Acer’s SignalUp technology, which works on a Mimo-type principle, magnifying the wireless signal between two antenna.

Cyberlink’s PowerDVD, Norton Internet Security and a range of Acer business software for video conference and laptop management will all be part of the package.

The Acer Ferrari 110 will be available from late Q4 and no pricing is available yet.

All About Sports Cars

Author: Alexis Masterson
For many owning a sports car is a lifelong goal they aspire to. Even as children we are almost programmed to turn and look at the beautiful sleek sports car as it cruises through the town. Sports cars are the zenith of motoring and something which people dedicate their lives to. Benetton shops were created purely to fund one man’s love for racing and that is just one well known example.

Everyone can name at least one sports car, Ferrari’s, Porsches, Bentley, Aston Martin, Porsche, Lotus and Lamborghini to name just a few. So what is the appeal of such unobtainable cars? Sports cars aren’t for convenience or practicalities; they are purely made to be beautiful and luxurious. Why is it that so many of our own screen hero’s don’t drive practical 4×4’s or be economically friendly and cycle? Can we really picture James Bond turning up to save the world in a 5 door hatchback? No. Sports cars do exactly what they say on the tin. They are fast; they only hold 2 people and don’t worry about space for things like groceries.

Sports cars were initially manufactured for the affluent classes as the “ordinary” cars of the day were dull and boring and practical. Sports cars provided the luxury of speed, safety and comfort. With ordinary cars becoming better looking, more comfortable and safer and the sports cars becoming economically unsound the market is dropping. People are driving now not for pleasure but because they have to. Public transport is becoming more expensive and with town and cities spreading ever wider and wider the need to drive is becoming more prevalent. For those who buying a car is not a necessity but a pleasure, you can complete your man about town image by buying the latest fashion and accessories from Armani, Brioni (Suit maker for James Bond), BOSS, Kiton and Ralph Lauren or expensive cigars and watches like Cartier and Breitling from some of web sites that offer these products at more reasonable prices.

Hopefully, sometime soon we will remember why we love the dream of sports cars and forget our practical hatchbacks.

BMW raises the bar with latest M3

There’s more of everything including a V8 under the bonnet, but one thing BMW die-hards will miss, writes Philip King | September 29, 2007

BE prepared for a shock, BMW aficionados, because the new M3 misses something many owners obviously regard as vital: foglights.

If you buy the latest version of BMW’s signature performance car, then you’ll have to make do without them. Driving in daylight around the suburbs might never be the same again. You’ll have to do without them because they’ve gone to make way for two more air intakes set deep in the front apron. This M3’s engine — a V8 for the first time — needs airflow so huge that the front apertures have to be even more aggressive than usual. One of the bonnet vents also helps it breathe.

Throw in the naked carbon-fibre roof and there’s little danger that this M3, unlike earlier forms of the car, will be mistaken for a standard 3 Series Coupe.

With this car BMW moves the M3 concept further away from its starting point than ever before. Aside from the base structure, the only shared bits are the lights, doors, windows and bootlid. Even the familiar M styling cues of side gills and quad pipes have a bit more bling in the E92, as this generation is known.

As with almost any model, the latest M3 increases in size, power and complexity.

Compared with the previous E46, the E92 grows substantially, especially in length. The wheelbase and front overhang are longer but much of the 12cm increase sits behind the rear axle, giving a disproportionately long tail.

Other dimensions also increase, but not by as much. So it’s only a little wider and just 4cm higher. The boot is a few litres more capacious and occupant space improves — although the rear seat is now sculpted for two instead of three.

As in other recent BMWs, the centre console controls are angled towards the driver — just like they always used to be.

Larger dimensions mean more mass, and BMW has shaved weight to redress the balance. This includes the engine itself, which uses an aluminium-silicon alloy block for a 15kg reduction over the previous six-cylinder. The carbon-fibre roof loses 5kg, aluminium rear suspension 2.5kg, plastic bumper supports 6kg and plastic ski-hatch 7kg.

This strenuous diet was clearly essential as the E92 tips the scales at nearly 1.6 tonnes before anybody gets in. It effectively starts with one additional passenger over the E46, at 85kg heavier. However, weight distribution remains 50:50 and the overall shape is slightly more slippery, with a drag coefficient of 0.31.

The centrepiece of the E92 is its engine, derived from the V10s in the M5 and M6 and built at the same factory where BMW assembles its Formula 1 V8s. This 4.0-litre unit boasts the complete portfolio of BMW engine tricks, including variable camshaft timing, eight throttle butterflies and a special exhaust. The whole orchestra is conducted by an electronic control unit which performs 200 million calculations a second. This car also employs a brake energy regeneration system to charge the battery, which means the energy draining alternator can be decoupled from the engine most of the time.

Giving the M3 two more cylinders means there’s now a level playing field with its rivals from Mercedes, Audi and (soon) Lexus. It’s also a significant landmark in BMW’s history: its signature straight six-cylinder engines can no longer be tweaked enough to keep up the competition. While there’s no doubting the appeal of a V8, BMW has abandoned one of its key points of difference.

With two more cylinders and a capacity increase, power output rises 57kW and torque 35Nm. This V8 revs higher and harder, too, than the six — with peak power arriving at 8300rpm, above the previous unit’s maximum speed. Meanwhile, maximum torque arrives 1000 revs lower than before, at 3900rpm.

After allowing for the E92’s extra weight it still outperforms the E46 by some margin. Every kilowatt now has to propel just 5.1kg instead of 6.1kg. The result is a 0.4 quicker sprint time to 100km/h (4.8 seconds).

Other figures put things in perspective. Power output per litre of capacity is actually down slightly. Fuel economy is worse (12.4 litres per 100km against 11.9) although proportionally less than the power increase. Top speed is the same — electronically limited to 250km/h.

Better acceleration is mirrored by improved stopping power. Both front and rear brakes stick with single-piston floating caliper set-ups, but the discs themselves are bigger. BMW claims the E92 can pull up from 100km/h in just 34m.

An upgraded version of the previous six-speed manual remains the standard transmission, although the new automated gearbox promises to be an interesting development. While BMW has yet to confirm details, it’s expected to be a double-clutch system similar to the one already used by Audi. Due next year, it marks a retreat from BMW’s sequential manual gearbox, or SMG, which was heavily criticised for its jerky operation and complexity.

However, complexity is second nature to BMW and in that respect, this M3 follows the same path as the last. The redesigned chassis employs electronically controlled dampers for the first time and they have three selectable settings. That’s where the driver-programmable part of the car just begins. There are also two levels of steering assistance, three throttle settings and three degrees of stability control intervention.

Buyers of this generation will have to get used to a price rise as well, with the M3 going up by $17,000 to $157,000. BMW says most of this can be accounted for by the additional features in the car. These include adaptive headlights, voice recognition, loads of leather, parking radar, BMW telematics and heated front seats.

Other road users will be grateful there’s one omission: those foglights.
